September is one of my favourite months living in the city, you still get some of those warm lazy days of summer plus crisp mornings that make you pull out those forgotten sweaters from winter. One of the most bountiful crops in the city you can forage for this time of year are apples!
At our next WFS meeting on Monday we’re apple hunting along Pottery Rd, then taking our haul to the Brick Works to enjoy some of last year’s apple butter and start our own by making sauce. Be sure to bring your own bag for apple collection and a jar or container to take your sauce home in. Apple sauce and apple butter make great local alternatives to sweeteners and binding agents in baking, taste great on their own or spread over toast. Our friends at Not Far From the Tree have a great recipe you can try for Apple Bread.
